Professional English Coaching: What Does It Actually Feel Like?

If you already use English professionally, choosing a coach can be surprisingly difficult.
You are not simply looking for someone who knows English. You are deciding whether that person will listen closely enough to understand where your communication is breaking down, recognize the pattern beneath it and help you develop something you can use again.
What happens during a coaching session?
Will the work reflect your role, your challenges and the conversations you actually have?
And when the session ends, what will you take back to work?
That is what my new YouTube series, Coaching Moments, is designed to reveal.
One small phrase can reveal a useful pattern
Each Coaching Moment begins with something I have heard.
The speaker’s meaning may be completely clear. The sentence may contain only one small grammatical issue, an unexpected word choice or a familiar structure transferred from another language.
But that small moment can tell an experienced coach a great deal.
In one episode, I hear:
“That depends of how long I stay in the role.”
The word “of” makes sense when we recognize the Spanish structure “depende de.” The correction is “depends on,” but the coaching does not end with replacing one preposition.
We identify the source of the pattern and create a visual mnemonic: when something depends, it needs support. It leans on something.
In another episode, I hear:
“I didn’t understood what he meant.”
Here, two words are trying to carry the sentence into the past. “Didn’t” has already done that work, so the next verb returns to its base form:
“I didn’t understand what he meant.”
The memory tool is simple: “didn’t” carries the past, while the next verb travels light.
The objective is not to collect mistakes. It is to understand patterns well enough to make a stronger choice the next time you speak.
Professional English coaching begins with close listening
Sometimes the issue is grammatical. Sometimes it comes from your first language. Sometimes the sentence is accurate, but your main point arrives too late or your tone sounds more uncertain than you intend.
You may understand a meeting but struggle to enter the conversation before it moves on. You may know exactly what you recommend but become hesitant when someone challenges your reasoning. You may have the language to begin an answer but lose its structure halfway through.
These moments do not all require the same response.
Close listening helps us identify what is actually happening. From there, coaching may include explanations, mnemonics, reference materials, retrieval prompts, targeted homework, guided rehearsal and practical resources designed around your work.
A useful correction improves one sentence.
Effective coaching helps you recognize and manage the pattern behind it.
