Per My Last Email at Work: What It Really Means

Someone asks a question at work. The answer is already sitting in their inbox.
So you reply:
“Per my last email…”
Perfectly professional English.
Technically.
The phrase has become a workplace meme because everyone knows that per my last email at work can carry a little more meaning than the words themselves suggest. Sometimes it is simply pointing someone toward information they missed. Other times, it is the professional equivalent of saying, “I have already answered this. Please go and look.”
Per My Last Email at Work Depends on Context
The important thing is not to assume hostility every time you see the phrase.
If someone genuinely thinks you overlooked an earlier message, it may be completely neutral. But if you have just asked for information they sent yesterday, perhaps more than once, there may be some frustration underneath it.
That does not mean you need to respond to the frustration.
A simple “Thanks, I found it. I’ll take it from here” acknowledges the information and moves the conversation forward. No defence. No counterattack. And probably no “Per my last email…” in return.
The skill is recognizing the subtext without allowing the subtext to control your response.
